This chapter is for a person who helps another person with long division. It arose in the use of a notion of sharing in teaching long division to a 10-year-old Y6 student.
There are five pages of the chapter. Use the links at the top of each page to navigate from page to page.
- This short introduction.
- Sharing a few jelly beans. Imagine 5 pupils sitting around a bowl of 48 jelly beans, devising ways of sharing the beans among them.
- Sharing a large sum of money. Now imagine that the bowl has the proceeds from a lottery in the form of bank notes and coins: 1000-dollar notes, 100-dollar notes, 10-dollar notes and 1-dollar coins. . We now discover the pattern for short division (with the help of a local banker at the adjacent table).
- The pattern for long division. The pattern is the same!
- Animation of long division. An animation allows us to see a gif-image display the steps in the pattern. [A gif-image has the Graphic Interchange Format.]
